Coordinates on the Halo 3 Hud?

I tried the gun lowering thing, and instead some coordinates came up. I'm pretty sure i did it wrong. Has this happened to anyone else?

Also, when you pop a flare, and you hold a battle rifle, do the red dots become saturated a bit?
