Halo 3 Multiplayer Question?

I recently started playing Halo 3 on XBox Live since I stopped playing for almost a year since I started playing mostly CoD5, Left 4 Dead & Midnight Club: LA. Something that I didn't understand was if the matches made, such as type and map, were random or chosen. When I'm party leader, I don't know how to or if I can change map or match type. Someone answer?
