Halo 3 Question: Concerning missions and terminals...?

Do you have to go through the whole mission for the terminals to work? Or can you start from a checkpoint?

Unfortunatly from the start, and to get the running man ( or whatever its called) achievement you have to use it twice. hoped it helped
