How can you play Halo 3 online?

Hi everyone! I am a girl and I am so bad at Halo 3 that I am mocked by the guys at school when I play at my friends house...I want to play online to gain at least a little "skill" haha. How do I start an account? Does it cost anything? Tell me some info :) Is it like live? can you play with people playing on xbox 360 live?
