How come I cant chat with other online gamers when I play Halo 3 on Xbox Live?

During play, I have a circle looking thing next to my antenna and It only allows me to talk when I push up on the game pad. Im totally lost!!!!!!

Ok, when your at the main menu, press start to go to settings, and go down to the tab that says "voice communication" or somthing like that. Then you can change it to when you talk into the microphone, everyone can here you without pushing on the pad. But remember in big team battle and other big team games, you can't change that, you have to press on the pad. good luck!
