How do I stop getting my azz handed to me on Halo 3?

I didn't actually beat the game yet, but when I play online I tend to get killed all the time and I'm almost always at the bottom of my team's list. Are there any tips to where I can get more kills and not get merked all the time.

I completed campaign on Legendary with my mates online and that's how I learnt some of the strengths and weaknesses of all the weapons. The Battle Rifle and Needler are good all around weapons, the needler is very powerful at close range and homes in on far away targets whereas the BR is great for anything close or mid range. Always aim for the head except when you're wielding a shotty, for that you try and get the whole reticule within your targets body. Then all the pellets will hit and you'll get almost always a 1-shot kill. Use your dual-wielding whenever possible as well. Dual-wield plasma rifles is a very deadly force, as is dual-weild SMGs. A tip from the first Halo is always vary your movements. The analogue stick gives you lots of control over your movement so keep your camera trained on your target and move in any direction possible while shooting. Also while it's fun to rip off turrets and move around with them you're better off staying on the tripod and just picking off targets in your sight. If you lose your shield, take cover and let it recharge, then jump back on the turret and keep shooting. If you don't detach it you have unlimited ammo so use it to your advantage. If you encounter two peeps duking it out, take cover, let them finish, and then pop out and take down the weakened victor for an easy kill. Finally, just keep practicing all of this and hopefully you'll be battle hardened in no time.

Peace Out.

Matchmaking usually tries to set up an even game, it wants to encourage the most competitive game it can.

I didn't have a 360 for a few years (I had to pay rent and was broke) and had to resort playing at a friends while he was doing something else (like WOW) or played together as a guest. Since he was highly ranked and I was new to the game, I was getting my a** handed to me every time. Eventually playing against really good players over live, it builds your skills.

On other occasions I've gone over another friend's place and played halo with him as a guest and wondered how I was getting killing sprees so easily. Turns out his rank was a Sergeant while my previous friend was a Brigadier.

Tips I've learned.
-Learn the maps, learn the maps, learn the maps. - Each map has it's own strategy.

-Don't rely on power weapons, if you can't kill someone with the weapons you start out with, you're in for a rough time. The battle rifle is a great weapon to have at all times.

-Never just run and gun. Hid behind cover, crouch to hide on the radar.

-Practice with your grenades. A well placed grenade will either kill or take away the enemy's shield.

-Lone Wolves is a good mode to train in my opinion, it teaches you to rely only on yourself.

I noticed a huge difference in the way skilled players play vs new ones just by playing Halo on other people's xbox's.

Oh and don't let any a**holes get to you by talking sh!t, all these little punks get real brave behind a microphone.
