How do you play rocket race on halo 3?

Me and my friend were doing social doubles, and we got this mode called rocket race on rats nest speed. i didnt understand what the heck to do, since there were vips along with checkpoints at the same time. we placed in third, and i dont even know how my friend and i got the points. since everyone seems immortal, you cant kill anyone, and no one takes damage. except several times i was assassinated from behind.

can anyone fill me in on how to play this mode? im so confused and i need help.

i already know about the thing where bungie removed this playlist, so please dont tell me about that.
