How does xbox live work on halo 3.?

I just got a xbox 360 like 2 weeks ago and my first game is halo 3. The problem is that when i try to go on xbox live with halo 3 I don't know how to get on it like I can invite people to play with that are in my friends list or people I have played with before but I can't search rooms and join them like in Ghost Recon 2. Is there a way to do that or can you only play with you friends online?

As well as having the option to just play with your friends, Halo 3 offers an automatic Matchmaking system that links you to other people to play.

for halo 3 on live you can't really choose who you play with unless they're your friends or your in a party with them. Otherwise, you have to do matchmaking and there you get paired up with random other people at arouund your skill level. Usually it should give you an option that allows you to invite friends to games but you have to be in a party open to friends.
