losing halo 3 game saves!!?

i just got halo 3 recently and i havent finished the game yet. One day my frnd came over to play co-op and we played a few levels. after we were done it deleted my campaign game saves and i dint know how to save the co-op one. Later on i had to play the game from the beginning again.
Why is this happening?
