Multiplayer on ODST vs. Halo 3...?

If I buy the upcoming Halo 3 ODST with all the same multiplayer maps as regular halo 3, could i play halo on xbox live multiplayer against a friend who has regular halo 3

I believe so because during E3 09 Microsoft states all new maps for halo can be downloaded for halo 3 and with previous maps from halo 3 to halo ODST.
