play Halo 3 campaign online. Can you help?

Me and my friend play campaign on Halo 3. whenever we go to campaign and wait for it to load, it goes to start game and does not try to find a match. My question is, how do we play campaign online with others? Can you give me intructions on how to set it up?

you got to party options and go to open party you have a online account if you dont then im wasting my time but then you invite other people or they will join u
