Save Halo 3 campaign progress?

Is there a way to save the progress that is made by two players when playing the campaign? Its cuz me and my cousin want to beat it together but we dont know how to save the progress

every level you complete saves, and there are various checkpoints throughout the levels. You can leave the campaign and come back to it at another time.
