What ranking system goes up and down in halo 3 ranked matches?

I just started playing Halo 3 online and when I was playing the ranked matches I lost a couple and this thing poped up saying that I am now a recruit. but I thought that was the lowest I could get. what Im trying to figure out is right befor you start a ranked match you will see your Gamertag and next to it it will say somthing like 5 and then a diamond shape. or you will just see a diamond shape. what do these symbles mean. Sorrry if this is confusing I dont kno how to really word it.

Right, those would be your rank and skill which are specific to a playlist (although it wasn't always like that). T
he number determines your skill, which is calculated based of a point system that establishes additions or subtractions based off wins and losses.
You'll win more points if you beat someone of a high rank than you would beating someone of a lower rank. Conversely, you'll lose more points if you lose to someone of a lower rank than you would to someone of a higher rank.
The shape is just a quick-reference to your rank so someone doesn't have to check each individual gamertag.
