I want to play Halo 3 on Xbox Live but I don't know which membership to get. I know there's silver and gold, however I don't know if silver membership will allow me to play games vs other players on Halo 3 Live. Could you let me know if silver will allow me to, or if I need to get gold? Also, what other games are really fun on Xbox Live? Thanks!

You need Gold but the xbox comes with a free month of gold.
There are lots of fun games to play online but here are favorites:
Guitar hero,
rock band,
Shaun White,
Call of Duty 5 world at war because of zombies(note: the campaign is between poor and good),
gears of war,
virtual fightar 5,
and number 1:Halo 3 which you and i have.
