Xbox Live gifts? Halo 3 Map Pack?

I got told that if you buy a gold subscription for a year that if you go onto the xbox website you can get a free gift,a nd my friend said that i could use this to get the legendary map pack for Halo 3 for free.

Is this true and if so, could someone give me instructions on how to do this.
