Can I use friend's copy of halo 3 to download to hard drive?

my halo 3 loads the main menu but doesn't load any of the maps. If I would borrow my friend's copy, could I download it to my hard drive but still use my disc to start it?

I would certainly think that would work. I honestly couldn't tell you either way, however.
