Halo 3/Live Silver Membership question:?

So supposively you aren't supposed to be able to play against other players with only silver membership on xbox live, how come halo 3 allows it?

best buy sponsered xbox live weekend i think... everyone with a silver membership got gold for a couple days... or u jus got lucky and got gold membership out of no where like me lol
