halo 3 skulls what do i do with the skulls?

ok when i find a skull in halo3 like in SIERRA 117 what do i do with the skull
(and if i grab it does it just automatically add up to the skull count)

(also whats iron and gold skulls how many skulls are their in total)
how many iron skulls
how many gold skulls
