Halo 3 xbox live joining a match?

I've tried joining a friends match but it says something about not having the right map or something. is there anyway i can just join someone else's match that isn't a friend. I mean like searching for a match to join. I have a gold memebership.
Is the heroic map pack free or is that just the regular map pack? im just a little confused =S

Its called matchmaking, its slow, its bad, it doesn't work in australia.

and go to the marketplace and download the heroic map pack,
and when u have live 800 microsoft points download the legendary map pack

try to download the new map pack its free, called the heroic pack or soemthin its in the marketplace.
