halo 3 xbox live?

whenever i do big social on xbox live on halo 3, i always have to press a button to talk (i think its the directional button)....why is that?
normally i just talk without pressing any buttons on the 360 controller....i talk and i can hear them...and they can hear me...but why suddenly do i have to press a button on the controller to talk?

Thats because so many people talk and I have to do that too. It gets annoying.
