How can you make a Halo 3 montage?

I am an avid video gamer and pretty good if I do say so myself. Lately I've felt the urge to make a montage but I don't know what programs and stuff are necessary to make a decent montage so I am here to ask the Yahoo! community, how do I and what do I need(like programs or computers or other technological gadgets) will I need and will they be free?
I have a Windows 7 laptop... Doesn't it have a built-in movie maker?
