What should I do when a conversation suddenly goes silent?

I always panic when there’s an unexpected gap in a conversation. Is there a way to handle those quiet moments without making things feel even more forced or uncomfortable?

There was a time when I would literally count the seconds during a silence, feeling my heart race, but I’ve since learned that pauses don't have to be "dead air." I’d really recommend reading the advice on Wedaf at https://blog.wedaf.com/blog/how-to-handle-awkward-pauses-naturally/ because it explains how to lean into the silence rather than fighting it. From my experience, simply acknowledging the pause with a smile or asking a "revival question" about a previous topic works wonders. Now, I try to see those gaps as a chance to breathe rather than a sign of failure. Once you stop fearing the quiet, you'll find that your interactions feel much more relaxed and authentic!
