Who is cortana really reffering to in the very beggining of halo 1?

Well at the very start, the Captain & Cortana have a quick convo and it goes; "Cortana, all I need to know is did they/he make it? I think we both know the answer to that..." Are they referring to Noble Six's survival after the Pillar of Autum left him? Or somebody else?

Well you completely misheard the conversation. He asks Cortana if they lost them. When the Pillar of Autumn flees Reach they have a fleet of Covenant Cruisers after them. Due to the Cole Protocol, no UNSC ship is allowed direct slipspace to Earth. So Cortana makes a blind jump which takes them to Installation 04.
