Why can't I join my friends games in Halo 3?

I always try joining my friends games I press "Join in Prgoress" and it starts loading then a message pops up saying something about an "OPEN NAT" and that it's the best or something like that. It won't ever let me join a game so wtf? Got any ideas?..
