Your Foes
Grunts: These low level Covenant soldiers aren't good for very much. Well, they're excellent for testing the stopping power of your weapons or calibrating your targeting system, but not much else. The key to taking down Grunts is, well, shooting them. Repeatedly. Or just once in the head. If there are a lot of them congregating in one place, take out the Elite that should be nearby. The Grunts will freak out and scatter, allowing you the chance to take them out at your leisure
Jackals: These guys are best recognized by their large energy shield, which protects their frail body from attack. While they are usually standing still when you come upon them, they can move fast if they have to. The best way to take out a Jackal is to either use a plasma weapon to destroy their shield before killing them, or use a high powered human weapon to knock them back, exposing their bodies for a clean follow-up shot. Melee attacks also work extremely well, especially if you fire at them while charging toward them. These guys can snipe, too, so beware!
Drones: One of the new enemies in the game, these flying creatures are very fast, and usually travel in groups. You'll be able to hearing their telltale buzzing as they approach, so keep your ears open. They also have the ability to cling to walls and fire at you, but this is actually to your advantage, since it's easier to take them out when not moving. A few quick shots from any weapon will fell these guys, and you'll see them fall from the sky when they're dead.
Elites: If you've heard heard their familiar "Wort! Wort! Wort!" call, you know who these guys are. The Elites are basically the equal of a Spartan, with the same powerful shielding and excellent weapon skill. They usually brandish Plasma Rifles, and on harder difficulties will hold two of them. The more powerful of the Elites (Black, White, and Gold) will frequently use active camo and plasma swords, so beware! Your best bet for taking out an Elite is to snipe them from afar or stick a plasma grenade to them.
Hunters: Closer to a mobile tank than a traditional solider, the Hunters are gigantic creatures who move a lot faster than you'd initially think. They have a new weapon in Halo 2, which makes a distinctive sound before firing a green beam. Know that sound, because you'll want to jump when you hear it. Taking down a Hunter takes a very long time with traditional weapons, but you can take them out with something strong by aiming at the soft, brown, fleshy part between their armor plating. Sticky plasma grenades work very well, too, but your best bet is to circle around and blast their exposed backs.
Brutes: One of the other new enemies in the game, these ape-like creatures are fast, strong, and smart. They all use very powerful weaponry (the Brute Shot and the Brute Plasma Rifle, which fires much faster than the standard one), but won't hesitate to charge you if they drop it. Your best chance to take the Brutes out is to hit them with their own Brute Shot, or hit 'em with a grenade.
General Tactics
Zoom Cancel: When using either of the Sniper Rifles, depending on your controller set up, it takes two clicks to zoom all the way back out from the 10x magnification. Those two clicks are a little cumbersome on your Analog stick, huh? Well there's a faster way. Instead of zooming out of a scoped weapon, double tap Y and it will start the animation to bring up your second gun and then swap to your first gun. Done correctly, you'll never see the second gun and you won't have to bother zooming out again.
Crouch Jumping: A bit tougher in Halo: CE, crouch jumping is the best way to get something extra out of your jump. Click the left stick (or whatever your config uses for crouching) and in mid-air the Chief will lift his legs up and you'll get a little extra distance. Crouch jumping is integral to getting around Bungie's maps.
