On halo 3 (smg and the assault riffle)?

i just want to know whats the difference between the smg and assault riffle and which ud prefer?

I like duel SMG's more but under the circumstances I find myself using the assault rifle more but I ussually get more kills with the SMG's

i'm pretty sure the smg is a short range gun where the assault rifle is short to medium range, the smg i personally prefer as i find it more efficient to kill people with, and its something different as ou always spawn with an assault rifle

smg is the one i prefer it has more power and dual-wield compatibilty, assault rifle is standard respawn so not really 'special'

The SMG is more powerful and has a shorter range, and can be dual-wielded.
